Peabody Essex Museum:
Starting with the 2011-2012 Grants Cycle, the PEM seeks to join with SEF grant awardees in the areas of arts and culture through assisting with implementation of grants in several areas, including:
- Free admission to school groups (approximately 100 admissions, can be used for 100 unique visits or for 25 students visiting 4 times during the school year – or any other configuration) ($750 value)
- Resource and program development sessions with PEM educators to develop museum visits that link directly to your curriculum goals including development of post-visit activities to be done in the classroom.
- Access to exhibition space for culminating events during public hours to be determined on an as needed basis. To access this benefit, ample lead time is required due to booking requirements as well as the lead time required to be listed in the calendar of events distributed to museum members and posted online. Please note: This does not cover the cost of hospitality (refreshments, etc) associated with events.
If you intend to use these PEM resources, please include “PEM Partnership” in the title of your proposal, describe what you will access in both the grant application, and list them in the budget sheet of your submission as “PEM in-kind support”.
Please feel free to contact Gavin Andrews prior to your application submission so the museum can help develop and provide information related to the museum visits and how they will support your classroom activities and goals.
Grant applicants should consider this incredible asset when applying for grants and contact Gavin Andrews at Gavin_Andrews@pem.org for more information.
Thank you PEM!

Salem Sets Sail: Ships, Sailors and the Sea Grade 5
Come aboard two famous Salem ships, Friendship and Fame, to discover a time when Salem’s name was known worldwide! Experience maritime history where it happened as you and your students set sail in Salem Harbor!
Through hands-on activities and guided exploration on shore and at sea, students discover how the enterprise and daring of Salem’s merchants, mariners and privateers transformed the port city of Salem from a tiny fishing settlement into a center of world trade. Students gain an understanding of the crucial role Salem played in the establishment of America and the growth of the new nation.
In this program, students will:
- Sail in Salem Sound as crew members on board the replica privateer Fame, taking a turn at the tiller, raising sails, and learning to navigate at sea
- Examine authentic sailors’ objects and explore the replica merchant vessel Friendship to draw conclusions about life and work at sea in the 19th century
- Use their senses to inspect various world trade goods brought to Salem and learn of the importance of world trade in America’s economy and lifestyle both historically and today
- Make a personal connection with one of America’s national parks.
