The Friendship
What Sails? Who says kindergartners are too young to drive? In this creative project, they were the driving force behind the creation of their very own sailboats. After studying ocean vessels, including our very own Friendship, and being visited by a carpenter who explained the tools used in boatbuilding, students measured, built, painted and launched their very own creations. They recorded their experience in special portfolios which they shared with their families on portfolio night.
Ideas from Other Foundations
Origami ~ Where Math Goes 3D: Origami master Michael LaFosse worked with one town’s 3rd, 4th & 5th graders to experience math from a new perspective. By connecting the ancient art of paper-folding to a variety of curriculum areas, he captured students imagination.
Problem Solved: Math educator and author Greg Tang livened up one district’s math program with his dynamic presentation incorporating visuals, language and art to teach his own method of grouping numbers in order to quickly and confidently solve math problems.
