Destination Imagination at Bowditch

If you have ever had a child at Saltonstall, Horace Mann, or Salem Academy Charter School, you know that Salem has a long and decorated history in the world of Destination ImagiNation. Annually, a couple of teams place at the top of their group at the regional competition in Beverly, and most years at least one of those teams advances to the Global Finals.
Destination ImagiNation (DI) is a worldwide organization that encourages child-directed creativity. Teams of up to seven students - learn higher order thinking and improve in creative thinking, critical thinking and collaborative problem solving - as they work to create a solution to one of six unique challenges each year. While each team has a manager, all the ideas and work must come from the team members.
Carolina Soto, a junior at SACS, has been a part of DI since the 7th grade. When she noticed that the Nathaniel Bowditch School didn't have a DI program she spoke with the principal and brought the program there. This is the four-person team’s 2nd year. In September they all said they would advance to Globals. Somehow they just knew that they would make it.
They chose the Improvisation challenge this year. They researched explorers, along with the cultural treasures they have left for the world. In competition, they imagined multiple scenarios and quickly found a solution that address all the randomly selected obstacles, all while incorporating the explorers, their treasures and the one prop allowed - a white bed sheet.
They placed 1st at the Regional Competition in Beverly and 3rd in the State Competition at WPI. Now they are working very hard to raise the necessary funds to send them to Knoxville,TN, where they will compete at the end of May against all the states plus 17 other countries.

Cada año, un par de equipos terminan en el tope de su grupo en la competencia regional en Beverly, y en la mayoría de los años al menos uno de esos dos equipos avanza a las Finales Globales.
Destination ImagiNation (DI) es una organización global que pro mueve la creatividad dirigida por niños. Los equipos de hasta siete estudiantes "aprenden sobre el pensamiento de orden superior y cómo mejorar el pensamiento creativo, pensamiento crítico y la resolución de problemas colaborativa" mientras laboran para crear una solución para uno de seis desafíos únicos cada año. Aunque cada equipo tiene su dirigente, todas las ideas y el trabajo deben provenir de los miembros del equipo.
Carolina Soto, estudiante de tercer año en SACS, ha sido parte de DI desde séptimo grado. Cuando se dio cuenta de que la Escuela Nathaniel Bowditch no tenía un programa DI, habló con el director y logró que se trajese el programa. Éste es el segundo año del equipo de cuatro. En septiembre, todos decían que avanzarían a las Globales. Todos sabían de algún modo que lo lograrían.
Escogieron el desafío de Improvisación este año. Investigaron exploradores, así como los tesoros culturales que han legado al mundo. En la competencia, imaginaron varios escenarios y rápidamente hallaron una solución que abordase todos los obstáculos seleccionados al azar, a la vez que incorporaban los exploradores, sus tesoros, y el único accesorio permitido – una sábana de cama blanca.
Obtuvieron el primer lugar en la Competencia Regional en Beverly y llegaron terceros en la Competencia Estatal en WPI. Ahora están trabajando arduamente para recolectar los fondos necesarios para enviarlos a Knoxville, Tennessee, donde competirán a fines de mayo contra todos los estados y 17 países adicionales.
