21st Century Learning at Collins Middle School

Coming up in June, Collins Middle School will be competing in not one, but two amazing S.T.E.M. related design challenges. The first design showcase will take place at Boston Children’s Hospital, were Collins scholars will have the chance to go head to head with some of the best middle school toy designers in the state! Five schools throughout Massachusetts that offer the Design and Modeling course through Project Lead the Way, will design a toy to help improve the development and coordination skills of a child with Cerebral Palsy. Scholars will present their designs to a panel of judges that will include patients and doctors in the CP unit and other professionals that work in the design field.
Our second design showcase will be hosted by Collins Middle School, were five schools throughout the region will again have the opportunity take their design thinking skills and innovate an existing toy, device or object! Prizes and recognition will be awarded to the top designers in both competitions.
Both of these opportunities would not be available to our scholars if it were not for Glenn Burns, the principle of Collins Middle School, who has taking on the initiative of incorporating S.T.E.M. curriculum into the academic school day at Collins. Mr. Burns has recognized the importance of 21st Century skills for all of the scholars at Collins, and has built an exceptional and diverse curriculum with the help of Project Lead the Way, dedicated staff and grant based funding. Curriculum includes, Design and Modeling, Automation and Robotics, Medical Detectives, Green Architecture, Computer Programing and coming this fall Flight and Aerospace, as well as a few other exciting courses that will prepare our scholars for high school and beyond. Aprendizaje del Siglo XXI en La Escuela Secundaria Collins

Al entrar junio, la escuela Intermedia Collins estará compitiendo no en uno, si no, en dos sorprendentes desafíos de diseño relacionados con S.T.E.M. La primera muestra de diseño se llevará a cabo en el Hospital de Niños de Boston, donde los estudiantes de la Collins tendrán la oportunidad de competir mano a mano con algunos de ¡los mejores diseñadores de juguetes de las escuelas intermedias del estado! Cinco escuelas en Massachusetts que ofrecen el curso de diseño y modelado a través de Project Lead the Way, van a diseñar un juguete para ayudar a mejorar las habilidades de coordinación y desarrollo de un niño con Parálisis Cerebral. Los alumnos presentarán sus diseños a un panel de jueces que incluye médicos y pacientes en la unidad de CP y otros profesionales que trabajan en el campo del diseño.
Nuestra segunda muestra de diseño será organizada por la Escuela Intermedia Collins, donde cinco escuelas de toda la región tendrán la oportunidad de poner sus habilidades de diseño en uso al ¡innovar un juguete, dispositivo u objeto existente! Se otorgarán premios y reconocimientos a los mejores diseñadores en ambas competencias.
Ambas de estas oportunidades no estarían disponibles para nuestros alumnos si no fuera por Glenn Burns, el director de la Escuela Intermedia Collins, quien ha tomado la iniciativa de incorporar S.T.E.M. en el currículo académico en Collins. El Sr. Burns ha reconocido la importancia de las habilidades del siglo XXI para todos los alumnos en Collins y ha construido un currículo excepcional y diverso con la ayuda de Project Lead Way, un personal dedicado y fondos por subvenciones. El currículo incluye: Diseño y Moldeado, Automación y Robótica, Detectives Médicos, Arquitectura Verde, Programación de Computadoras, y en este otoño, Vuelo y Aeroespacial, así como también otros cursos que prepararán a nuestros alumnos para la secundaria y más.
