SALEM ACADEMY LANDS BOOKS FOR LIBRARY
Salem Academy Charter School students in the Lower School enjoy additional texts in library for students developing their reading skills.
Salem, MA, 1B January 22, 2018 – This past year with support from the Salem Education Foundation, Salem Academy students received funding to begin creating a library with age and grade appropriate books for developing and reluctant readers. The library is located in the Lower School Learning Center, a room equipped with a reading table, SMART board, and more to support students with developing their reading.
“The addition of the new library has been incredible. We now are able to provide students with access to high interest books and graphic novels that are not only appropriate for their reading level but for their age as well. From the addition of nearly 90 new titles, we have been able to match students with books that fit their interests, increase their time spent reading in and out of the classroom, and increase their engagement in reading as well.” said Carli Kusiolek, the Assistant Special Education Coordinator. “It’s been a great truly a gamechanger for our students to have new high interest texts that do not look “kiddish” but are still accessible for our students developing in their reading skills.”
Students are allowed and encouraged to borrow books to take home for their independent reading. With these new books students have access to a wide variety of topics and genres, that they otherwise would not have access too. While this is a start, Kusiolek adds that Salem Academy hopes to grow the amount of books available for students, noting that having engaging reading material is crucial to ensuring students stay engaged with reading.

Los estudiantes de intermedia de Salem Academy Charter School disfrutan de textos en la biblioteca para los estudiantes desarrollar sus destrezas de lectura.
Salem, Massachusetts, 26 de abril de 2018 – Este pasado año con el apoyo de la Fundación Salem Education, estudiantes de Salem Academy recibieron financiación para comenzar a crear una biblioteca con libros apropiados de edad y grado para lectores en desarrollo y lectores renuentes. La biblioteca está situada en el Learning Center de la escuela intermedia, una sala equipada con una mesa de lectura, pizarra SMART y mucho más para apoyar a estudiantes con el desarrollo de su lectura.
"La incorporación de la nueva biblioteca ha sido increíble. Ahora somos capaces de proporcionar a los estudiantes acceso a libros de gran interés y novelas gráficas que son no sólo apropiado para su nivel de lectura, pero a su edad también. La adición de cerca de 90 nuevos títulos, hemos podido colocar estudiantes con libros que se ajuste a sus intereses, aumentar su tiempo de lectura dentro y fuera del aula, y aumentar su participación en la lectura. Ha sido verdaderamente un cambio de juego para nuestros estudiantes tener nuevos textos de gran interés que no se ven "infantil" pero todavía accesibles a nuestros estudiantes desarrollar sus destrezas de lectura".
A los estudiantes se le permite y alienta a pedir libros pestados para llevar a casa para su lectura independiente. Con estos nuevos libros, los estudiantes tienen acceso a una amplia variedad de temas y géneros, que de lo contrario no tendrían acceso también. Mientras que esto es un comienzo, Kusiolek agrega que Salem Academy pretende crecer la cantidad de libros disponibles para los estudiantes, teniendo en cuenta que tener material de lectura atractivo es fundamental para garantizar a los estudiantes quedarse enganchados con la lectura.
