Voices Against Injustice Hosts Student Forum
On March 25, Voices Against Injustice and Salem State University’s Department of Communications hosted a forum, "News Literacy in an Age of Information Overload" at Salem State University. Panelists included journalism professors from SSU, the editor of the Salem News and one of the founders of The GroundTruth Project. Following brief remarks by each panelist, audience members participated in a lively 25-minute discussion on how to distinguish real news from fake news.
In his remarks to students, Kevin Grant, co-founder of GroundTruth Project commented that the gutting of local newsrooms, as the business model for journalism has changed, may be part of the reason Americans cannot agree on the same baseline facts, and why distrust of the media seems more prevalent than ever. Fellow panelist Dave Olson, editor of the Salem News, commented that in many ways Salem is ground zero for fake news, recalling the hysteria that surrounded the witch trials of 1692.
Later, at the Awards Ceremony, Charles Sennott, GroundTruth’s other co-founder, picked up the theme, "We don’t understand each other because we aren’t listening to each other. We don’t have journalists on the ground putting these stories forward." Sennott went on to say, "local news can be a binding agent for the country because, when you are discussing local issues, it’s very hard to tell whether you are red or blue."
Voices Against Injustice, formerly the Salem Award Foundation for Human Rights and Social Justice, is a Salem-based non-profit that celebrates today’s champions of human rights by presenting the annual Salem Awards, stewarding the Salem Witch Trials Memorial, and inspiring members of our worldwide community to confront fear and social injustice with courage. The Ground Truth Project is the 2018 recipient of The Salem Award. Each year, Voices Against Injustice also presents the Rising Leader Award to a student from our local community who exhibits a strong interest and a commitment to advancing the cause of human rights and social justice.
