Alice Merkl, Board member

Alice is originally from New York City and has lived in Massachusetts with her husband Barry and daughter Brenda for over 25 years, making Salem their home in 2011. She attended Salter College in Worcester for business and worked as an office manager in New York City. After returning to Massachusetts, Alice started her own successful business as a music teacher in Billerica. She currently teaches for the Marblehead School of Music, a family-owned business.  Alice fully supports public education, having attended elementary and high school in the Worcester Public Schools. Her daughter also attended the Billerica Public Schools. Alice has many family members that are public school educators.

Alice has a passion for community and public service, and enjoys her volunteer work with the Salem Food Pantry which has increased services substantially since the beginning of the Covid crisis.  She is also a volunteer for the Salem Together program, the Mack Park Food Farm, the Salem Backpack Program, The Community Life Center events, and the Historic Salem Annual House Tours.  She is active with the Salem League of Women Voters, and is a member of Historic Salem Inc and the Woman's Friend Society.

Alice enjoys learning about Salem's history, attending cultural events and museums, and dining in our many restaurants!
