Destination Imagination

Destination Imagination has been one of the most influential parts of my life. Being the shy little second grader I was, I was a little reluctant to join a DI team. Thank goodness I did, because the past 11 years would’ve been a lot different. Destination Imagination has taught me so many valuable lessons and I am confident that I will succeed going on to college because of it. DI forces participants to be creative and think “outside the box”. The problem solving skills that DI teaches young kids are vital to their future and there is no other program that even compares. Destination Imagination has shown me the magic of teamwork and what happens when people come together to solve a challenge. The creative solutions that kids come up with is truly amazing and is a real confidence booster. This wonderful program has changed my life, but it wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of team managers. I specifically want to thank Kelly Porter and Linda Connell for managing my teams these past 11 years and always being there for me. For the rest of my life, I will remember the pencil who was afraid of numbers and the solar powered vending machine, but more importantly I will cherish the friendships and life lessons that Destination Imagination has given me.

As a senior at Salem High School, I recently competed in my last year of Destination Imagination. As you get older, the creativity and innovation increases in teams and it is truly amazing. The only thing is the number of secondary level teams has been decreasing in the recent years. There are a lot more elementary and middle level teams and there are only a handful of secondary level teams. My advice is to stick with DI. A lot of people stop participating once they hit high school, but I am so glad I continued in the program. The feeling you get when your team is called up for a ribbon or trophy is truly unforgettable and it is worth it no matter how old you are. Destination Imagination is truly one of the most special things I have ever participated in and I can’t imagine what I would’ve done without it.

When I was in the third grade at Horace Mann, my team placed second in both the Regional and State Tournament which advanced us to the Global Finals in Knoxville Tennessee. We also won a Renaissance Award at both tournaments for outstanding creativity. When they called our name at the State Tournament, it was one of the most magical moments. Our outstanding creativity had given us the opportunity to compete against teams from all around the world at the Global Finals. Just being in the stadium with the thousands of people there for the event, felt like the Olympics. Each country or state marches in with their flag and it is such a cool experience. Between pin trading with other states and countries and watching amazing feats of creativity, Global Finals is truly one of the best things I’ve ever participated in. Some of my best childhood memories are from DI and Global Finals. I’ve made so many incredible friendships from this program that will last a lifetime. My advice to current teams is to cherish every moment of Global Finals and your years in Destination Imagination. I commend you for your outstanding creativity and love for problem solving and teamwork. Soon enough, you’ll be a senior in high school looking back on your years in the program with a longing for just one more year and great pride.

Destino Imaginación ha sido uno de los factores más influyentes de mi vida. Al ser una pequeña estudiante tímida de segundo grado, estaba un poco reacia a unirme al equipo de DI. Qué fortuna que lo hice, porque si no los últimos 11 años hubieran sido muy distintos. Destino Imaginación me ha enseñado tantas lecciones valiosas que por eso confío en que triunfaré y seguiré a la universidad. DI fuerza a los participantes a ser creativos y pensar “fuera de la caja”. Las destrezas de resolución de problemas que DI enseña a los jovencitos son esenciales para sus futuros y el programa no se puede comparar con ningún otro. Destino Imaginación me ha mostrado la magia de trabajar en equipo y qué sucede cuando la gente se reúne para resolver un reto. Las soluciones creativas que los chicos generan son realmente sorprendentes y una verdadera inyección de confianza. Este maravilloso programa ha cambiado mi vida, pero no sería posible sin la dedicación de los jefes de equipos. Quiero agradecer específicamente a Kelly Porter y Linda Connell por dirigir a nuestros equipos los pasados 11 años y estar siempre disponibles para mí. Por el resto de mi vida recordaré el lápiz que temía los números y la máquina expendedora con energía solar, pero aún más importante es el hecho de que apreciaré las amistades y lecciones de vida que Destino Imaginación me ha dado.

Ya como estudiante de cuarto año de la Escuela Superior de Salem, recientemente competí en mi último año de Destino Imaginación. Mientras más crecemos, más aumentan la creatividad e innovación en los equipos y es algo realmente sorprendente. Lo único es que el número de equipos a nivel secundario ha estado bajando en años recientes. Hay muchos más equipos a nivel elemental e intermedio y sólo un puñado de equipos a nivel secundario. Mi consejo es seguir con DI. Mucha gente deja de participar al ingresar en la escuela superior, pero estoy tan contenta de haber seguido el programa. La sensación que uno siente cuando llaman a su equipo para darle una cinta o un trofeo es realmente inolvidable y vale la pena no importa cuántos años unto tenga. Destino Imaginación es una de las cosas más especiales en las que ha participado y no puedo imaginarme que hubiera hecho sin ella.

Cuando cursaba el tercer grado en Horace Mann, mi equipo obtuvo el segundo lugar tanto en el Torneo Regional como en el Estatal y logramos así avanzar a las Finales Globales en Knoxville, Tennessee. También ganamos el Premio Renacimiento en ambos torneos por creatividad excepcional. Uno de los momentos más mágicos fue cuando llamaron nuestro nombre en el Torneo Estatal. Nuestra creatividad excepcional nos ha dado la oportunidad de competir con equipos de todo el mundo en las Finales Globales. Cada país o estado entra marchando con su bandera en las Finales Globales. El sólo estar en el estadio con miles de personas allí para el evento se sentía como las Olimpiadas. Cada país o estado entra marchando con su bandera y es una experiencia estupenda. Las Finales Globales son verdaderamente una de las mejores cosas en las que he participado, desde el intercambio de prendedores hasta poder observar increíbles hazañas de creatividad. Algunas de mis mejores memorias como niña provienen de DI y las Finales Globales. He formado tantas amistades increíbles mediante este programa que durarán la vida entera. Mi consejo a los equipos actuales es apreciar cada momento de las Finales Globales y sus años en Destino Imaginación. Los elogio por su creatividad excepcional y amor por la resolución de problemas y el trabajo en equipo. Pronto serán estudiantes de cuarto año mirando atrás a sus años en el programa con gran orgullo y anhelando tan sólo un año más.
